A mediator is someone who is trained to help people work out the details of an agreement when they are adversaries. Such as in a divorce. The provide neutrality. They can help you iron out custody, financial agreements, property distribution, etc. It could end up saving you a lot of money that would ordinarily go to an attorney. And judges (courts) love it when people try to work things out and they don't have to impose a settlement. It's possible that it won't work. But the courts will look at your situation in a more positive light because you tried.

an unbiased professional who guides discussion or helps resolve conflict between two people. They are supposed to be impartial and emotionally refrained... it really helps couples in trouble to discuss issues that usually become heated or emotional.
A mediator can also be used in divorce proceedings, and can be less expensive than a full blown court proceeding.
