He didn't do anything with the computer. It was basically a trick to the user.

If he showed him this false speed while downloading a file I can tell you what probably happened:

He Clicked a link to download a file
In the meantime he ignored the box for a little while asking him to save it, but the system was already downloading the file (This is normal operation).
When he finally clicked to save it, chose where, etc, for a small amount of time the speed LOOKED really fast, but it definitely was not.

You won't get 220MB/s over a phone line due to a very poor quality of the line, lack of shielding, degredation of signal (attenuation) etc.

That is a total lie.

56k uses a phone line which would not be capable of handling speeds of 220mb.

for 1 thats impossible, u used to be able to whats know as doublebarrle modems eg so u get 128kbps using the power of 2 dialup modems.
the max speeds on via PSTN eg telephone lines is 32MB and thats for broadband. but in places like china etc they have massive broadband speeds of about starting at 20mb etc.

so i think your friend is tell you a few fibs.

Sorry, not possible. average use on a home computer is only about 5-6 MB a month. DSL/cable can run about 6-800 kb/s.

Did it ever occur to you that he was lying? Because that's not how a internet connection works.
