ATTENTION! iPod is really worse when it comes to battery but sound quality is excellent.
Creative Zen M a new model with 30 to 60 gig like in ipod but has line-in recording,fm,fm recording and 262k color screen when compared to ipod's 65k.battery life - 2 hours extra.More colours too.
u can also go for the new mobi blue model which has whopping 146 hrs of battery.
you can also try the new toshiba whish has a bigger screen yet same size as th iPod.
U can also try the Sony's network Walkman which has a striking appearance with much longer battery life.
IPOD IS SCRATCHY GOOD LOOKING IN PHOTOS NOT IN HANDS NO GOOD PERFOMANCE TOO

A 5G iPod Video is the best. I will give you a whole bunch of reasons why it is worth it (I have one by the way.) First, it can hold 7500 songs. You don't see many MP3 Players that can do that do you? Also, the video capabilities option is wonderful. I have at least 100 videos on mine, a bunch of south park episodes, the simpsons, family guy, and 10 movies on top of that, and still room for 750 songs and over 400 photos, with 5GB to spare for whatever I want. And the iPod is one of the very few Mp3 players that can be hacked. I mean the real deal, playing Doom, Half-Life, Quake, and more games on it, writing text documents on it, painting pictures on it, and a whooole lot more. Look into iPod Linux, Rockbox, and iPod Wizard (for more info on this, go to http://iPodForum.co.nr .) And I could go on an on all day about why you should get the iPod Video. One other reason: once you have it in your hand the first time, you will never put it down. It's got a great look and I take mine everywhere. To school, on the bus, to the mall, my friends' houses, I even listen to it when I'm falling asleep. I'm addicted to it. I love it. If you get one then you will definately know what I am talking about. By the way, I was just talking about the 30GB iPod. If you get the 60GB iPod, then you can double everything I said which would be even better (the 60GB iPod is $400 and the 30GB is $300.) Good luck with your decision.

I got a 1GB Aigo from Argos for £40. Worth every penny. It's the best MP3 player I have EVER used. The sound quality is amazing even through crap headphones. I highly recommend it.
It can hold a lot of files, I have a 50+ CD collection on mine. The volume is great, it can get extremely loud and it has five EQ settings. It's also stupidly easy to use.
I prefer it to a frickin' i-pod any day.

I own a BenQ Joybee 120. The sound quality is very good, especially with the brands own headphones, (tried it with philips headphones, sound wasnt as good). It's smaller than the Apple iPod, its about the size of a matchbox. But the downside is that it doesnt hold as many songs (it holds about 60-120 songs depending on how long the songs are) .
It's about £89 so its well worth looking at.

I have an RCA Lyra and a SanDisk M230 - both work really well. The RCA has longer battery life since it uses an AA battery while the SanDisk uses a AAA battery, but for loading songs the SanDisk is more user-friendly. I'd recommend the SanDisk M240 or M250 (1 GB or 2 GB respectively). Both have flash memory - no moving parts that can be jolted out of whack.

The Cowon iAudios have the best sound quality, but aren't that easy to use.

The iRiver Clix has everything. (2GB/500 songs/$200)

The Creative Zen Nano Plus is one the cheapest MP3 players and has decent sound quality. (512MB/1GB=$55/$70)

Just don't go for an IPod if you want value for money, have you seen the price difference for equivalent size memory? It's shocking. Sony ones are pretty solid.

I personally recommend the Cream one, its available in 256 and 512 and can be bought from around £8.99 (UK). Sound quality is amazing for such a cheap model, better than most more expensive ones. Hope this helps.

Here is the 512 model: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CREAM-SELECTOR-512MB-MP3-PLAYER_W0QQitemZ120010941082QQihZ002QQcategoryZ80019QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
