To solve this, you can either look at a graph or take the first derivative of the equation. I would say none of the above! The first one is almost correct. However, at x=0, the derivative is also 0, indicating that the slope is 0. Because 0 is not negative (decreasing) this doesn't decrease for ALL values of x. It does for all but x=0. Answer A. 1 - x^3 is decreasing for all values it is defined. Because any number cubed keeps its sign, in the negative domain, the number will be 1-(-a) = 1+a, in the positive domain, the number will be 1-(a) = 1-a. 1+a will of course be larger than 1-a.
