I have lived in alot of states and have never seen this behavior any place else. Is this a trend due to high gas prices, will it sweep the nation as an alternate to driving cars? I'm looking at one right now "red" right outside my Townhouse on the street and its UGLY!!!

Many people don't have cars to go to the supermarket. Others might want to save on gas. Some of these people do get irresponsible, they leave the cart just anywhere, not considering the fact that it may be on the way of traffic, or a parking spot, or kids can get hurt by it when they're playing around. It is not just in California, however, it is all over. Anywhere there's a supermarket that provides carts, there will be people that will take them home. Some people even use it to carry their laundry to the laundromat, you'd be amazed. Just go to Los Angeles County, you will see mothers with 4 or 6 kids pushing a shopping cart full of laundry stuff. What can I tell you.

Because they know they can get away with it. I live in SoCal & I agree with you this is a huge problem in my area too. Whatever their pathetic reason to steal (in their minds - "borrow") the carts is, they are just to lazy to return them & push them in their neghbors yards. I wish they would prosecute these guys. How obvious is it when the closest grocery store is 2 mies away & you see someone pushing a cart down the street..... But the police just drive on by & do nothing. And the sad thing is, most grocery stores now offer home delivery......

In my neighborhood a lot of the lower income people don't have cars and they have to walk more than a couple of blocks to get to a grocery store. If they're buying for a whole family for a week they might not have much of an alternative.

It's not just a California thing. I live in an apartment building with 12 other families in Long Island New York and these people here stash them in our backyard. Sometimes I get so fed up with it that I load them into my minivan and return them to the store myself.

i don't know what part of california you live in, but i've been living here since the day i was born and i see homeless people with carts, not regular people.
you make it sound like the freeway's got a shopping cart traffic jam or something.

A lot of people take the shopping carts home because the shopping cart IS their home.

I've seen people do this too. I live in Illinois. I think people are just too lazy to carry their stuff so they bring the cart home with them. I think it's horrible.

lol, its a way to tell which neighborhood is good and which ones are bad. The more carts u see on the streets the worst it is.

MAYBE BECAUSE NO ONE TELLS THEM NOT TO AND IT IS STEALING...
I UNDERSTAND THAT MAYBE THEY DON'T HAVE A WAY TO CARRY THEIR GROCERIES BUT IT REALLY IS NOT COOL WHEN YOU GO TO A STORE AND THERE IS NO BASKET TO SHOP WITH BECAUSE ALL THE BASKETS HAVE DISAPPEARED...I THINK IT IS TIME SOMETHING IS DONE...IT DOES LOOK PRETTY UGLY WHEN YOU SEE THEM SCATTERED ABOUT...
