Like, the ivy league colleges are very hard to get in to and thousands apply. Only a few get in.

Getting? They have been extremely selective for a long time (their whole existence in some cases). The Ivies are actually not that selective, as compared to say Cal Tech which just gets low numbers of applicants who happen to be people who have qualifications to attend. The problem in Ivies and like MIT is that WAY too many unqualified people apply with the hope that some how they will slip through the eliminations. Put it this way, there are about 3.5 million high school grads each year in the US (not to mention other countries) and Harvard can house about 4,000 freshman, so to get in there you should be more qualified then 99.9989 if Harvard were the top choice of everyone. It is not so let's make it 5 times easier- 99.9943, that means that in a class of 500 the valedictorian has a worse class rank than the kid who got in to Harvard.

no, you should be thankfull for not growing up in a different country if you feel this way. In many other countries children are learning advanced mathamatics in elementry schools, languages by the 2nd and 3rd grade, and Millions apply for that special college while only few actually get in. New Universities need to arise and be built to harbor the growing amount of students who graduate with 4.0's and better.

Its their choice who they admit.

Its good that there is alot of competition to try and keep American education up to speed with the rest of the world. Were about 10th in the world in education and can do better. if anything they should be more competitive

And dump the no-child left behind thing. leave them behind and stop inhibiting the intelligent ones.

Schools are competitive with each other so they can produce competitive graduates who would excel. And that is what you call marketing too with good packaging. Sometimes it is the name that competes. But I hope the academe would pririoritize more on quality education.
