Reading from various books, during wars, the most lucrative biz was guns and ammo and alcohol. after the war, when everything was devastated, the wisest of the people went back to the countryside to till the soil. People go back to basics like farming. With their produce, they can feed their families and as their produce multiplies, they go on to barter with other goods until money starts circulating again.

I'm not being funny, and I can't cite a source, but I've heard that soap companies did pretty good. Soap is difficult to make, especially things like powdered soap, but rather inexpensive, so people still paid for many soap products despite the depression. Again, no source for that so don't bet money that I'm right.
