Consider yourself lucky to be living pay cheque to pay cheque.
There are those who are borrowing from credit card to credit card to pay back money they owe. Hundreds of thousands for some families.
Pay yourself first, with every pay cheque.
If you do not have one, please do open up a savings account.
Put away what (would be a few dollars for you) first time you cash that pay cheque, every time. Put that few bucks out of your mind as if it does not exist, no matter what type of 'emergency' you may come up with!
Once you have accumulated 3 months of earnings in your savings, you will not be in the category of living 'pay cheque to pay cheque'.
Saving can become an addiction also. To become habit an action needs to be repeated 21 times.... heard on the Healthy Balance show here in Canada.
Breaking any habit is difficult at first but with practise you can break the habit of spending your whole pay cheque.
I live on a very small income yet have savings. In the not so distant past had a huge income, owned property (payed a mortgage) and later declared bankruptcy. Was a difficult time for me.
Good luck.

Sit down and write down ALL of your expenses. Discover just how much you NEED to live. Now, cut back the crap you don't need. Do you really need HBO? Or TV for that matter? What about food? Do you really need that ice cream or the chips and diet coke? Next, stop buying stupid stuff like coffee. Don't dine out anymore. Keep track of anything that you spend, even though you really should not be spending anything anyway. After a month of that, you will see what garbage you are spending money on. Cut it out.
Then, once you have more money coming in than going out, take AT LEAST HALF of the left over, and put it in a money market fund EVERY MONTH.
You will retire happy.

I, too, live check to check. I have my Master's degree and is working on my second one. But really I have come to the realization that I have enough money to do with what I want. Excess money would be good, but if you can cover all your needs you are still more fortunate than 70 % of this world.

We paid off our house last year, hardly have any bills and will still have to count our pennies to get an ice cream cone at McDonalds for 79 cents. That is sad. Both of us work and all our kids our grown....it doesn't matter, the more you make, the more you spend.

No doubt about it: it's a hard life. Unless you have someone who can help you, then you're either going to have to reduce your spending, increase your income, or both to get out of your financial difficulties.

No, you are not the only one, I believe that most of us tend to adjust our lifestyles to our paycheck. Therefore when unforeseen things happen then we are not prepared and this causes a financial setback that is VERY hard to recover from.

Nope. Many people live check to check. Take it light and if you have your health, you have everything you need to win.
Good Luck.
