Go to www.namemeanings.com, they have the origins of thousands of names. You can even look up last names, though they don't have as many surnames as first names.

ancestry.com. If you know a few names from your family tree, try searching for the full names on google. Traced my family tree pretty far back that way and found loads of interesting websites concerning my family.

just google it, all kinds of crap pops up. I spent 12 hours on the net once doing that.
