I have been accused of borrowing money from a woman I worked for & I didn't. I need to know how to file an answer & I only have 2 weeks to do it. I wrote a letter but apparently it wasn't in the proper format. I don't want to have to hire a lawyer being that I did nothing wrong but, it looks like I may have to. I live in IL.

sounds like you have a lawsuit against you....if you have proof that you didnt do anything wrong...then hire a lawyer and counter sue for lawyers fees and whatever other expenses you incur.

Call your local courthouse and see if they have any basic forms for sale (usually they're like 25 cents/pg for the copy fee) and what their procedure is for filing an answer. At the court I worked for in Utah, we would accept a letter as long as it had the case # or party names and the word "Answer" at the top of the document. You may also ask them to pull a random case and let you see an answer for an idea as to how to format. Whereas most cases are public record, this is legal and not unusual to do.

Contact your local legal aid society (in your yellow pages or contact the courthouse). They provide free or sliding-scale reduced-fee services and should be able to help.

If you don't want to work with a lawyer at all, contact the court the action is in and ask whether they have a standard format or some sort of guidelines you can use to help you file the paperwork.

You can go to the court and affidavit on which to make your statment swear an oath in front of the court clerk or notary and have it registered for the court. The clerks will help you out with this. It is a statment of fact not how you feel so choose your wording carefully as a lie on an affidavit is like lying to the court.

You can go on the Court's website. Cook County, Lake County, etc. they may have a form you can use. Otherwise you will have to make one up: Here is an example for Lake county

LAKE COUNTY, ILLINOIS
