My son (who will be one next week) weighs 25 lbs. 32" tall. I nurse him morning and night (and give milk & water throughout the day). He has his upper and lower 2 front teeth. I know I should break away from the jarred foods... but I'm worried about what he can chew. I think I have a pretty good schedule for him... but am curious to see what other mothers with the same size child feed their children. I should add that both me & my husband are skinny people... so I don't think I'm over feeding my son. He's just a big boy. I would welcome suggestions on finger foods, and how much/oftern you feed them during the day.

I am a nutritionist

a one year old will not over or under eat as long as you are offering healthy food choices.

you are right to keep nursing, it provides significant calories protein, and vitamins and minerals to your child for a few years yet.

finger foods can be anything he can gum on and disolve, or anything soft.

cooked vegies would be good, legumes may work well, cherios are a favorite, toast strips (my niece liked to dunk hers in egg yolk) fruits that are soft or run through the food processor, yogurt full fat plain is a good sourse of protein but include it in this milk intake for the day.

limit his milk intake to less than 16-24 ounces a day, more can cause him to become anemic (breast milk should be unlimited)

I would recommend three main meals and two or three snacks, but he will let you know if and when he is hungry.

OK I would say that once they have teeth, give up on the breastfeeding, but its entirely up to you. However, our pediatrician wanted mine on whole milk at 12 mos, Your kid IS very big for his age, TALL, I mean. He sounds weight proportionate, also. Dont worry about a kid dieting, especially a toddler, just dont force the kid to eat all his food. He will eat when hes hungry. Its important to get them on a feeding schedule. 3 square meals a day, and try adding mashed potatoes, bread, and pureeing veggies, and meat, if the jarred food is too expensive. You can do this by offering him a tablespoon of it with each meal, and dont be surprised if he doesnt like it at first, it usually takes 9 tries or more to get used to new foods. Morning and afternoon snack can have finger foods, and meals too. Its important that your kid get plenty of finger foods. Try raisins, grapes, green beans, crackers, peas, and dont give him hot dogs, as these are a common cause of choking in children. If you DO, try chopping them up into teeny weeny pieces.
Remember, dont withold food from your child, just let him eat as much as hes hungry for. Kids only eat as much as they need. Also, when he starts walking, that baby fat will come right off (and he will surely have higher calorie intake needs, also)

I hope that helps. Also, try visiting the kids pediatrician and asking about whats best for your son, since there may be swallowing issues, or small motor, manipulation problems, and only your doctor can really give you an expert opinion. The public library often has good books on fun meals for toddlers, so thats another option you can use. Happy birthday to your little munchkin!

My daughter starts the day with 8oz of cows milk followed shortly after by a medium size bowl of cereal. She then has a piece of fruit. After nap, around 1pm she will have some pasta with sauce, or soup with bread, or whatever else. She has another piece of fruit. At 4pm she has 6oz of milk and then at 5pm she has a cooked dinner, at 7.30 she has another 8oz before bed.
Throughout the day she will have a biscuit, a piece of fruit and sometimes a bite of chocolate.

be aware though that sometime in their second year their growth rate will drop and so will their appetite

My 1 year old son (weight 20lbs), wakes at 7:30am he'll drink some water and eat 2 bananas sliced and some dry kix cereal or he'll eat melon pieces.
The rest of the day pretty much depends on what I have on hand, mostly I give him finger food, he enjoys it much more.
He loves cooked carrots (not mashed), beans (not refried), chez-it crackers, ritz, fresh tomatoes, string cheese (cut up), jumbo pretzels, broccoli & cauliflour steamed, green beans, cooked zuccini slices.
Keep a close eye on him as you give him new foods and he gets used to them so they don't pose a choking hazard.

My son wakes up around 730 and eats one half to three quarters of a piece of white bread with pb and jelly and about 6 oz whole milk. then around 11 he night have a small snack like pretzels or a yo-baby yogurt and then he goes to sleep. when he wakes he usually has a lunch like some noodles or leftovers from the night before, soup etc... then for dinner he eats whatever we eat like some meat, some fruit and some potatoes or noodles (he wont eat veggies at all yet) and all day he drinks milk from his sippy cup. Then at night since its so hot he usually has a popsicle about an hour before bed. We started our son on some finger foods at about 7 months like biter biscuits, wagon wheels, fruit puffs or sweet potato puffs, vanilla wafers, and my son LOVES those little bags of dry fruits you get in the baby aisle at wal-mart. They have apple and strawberry banana and corn. He still eats them up! You can find all that stuff at the baby section of you major grocer
