well there is steric hindrance to think of with every addition. if it's hard for something to get into place because it's near a big group it isn't gonna happen that much.

solvent polarity can determine if the solvent will interfere with the reaction. if it can it will (why orgo chemists hate water).

a good book to read is Ege's orgo text. it's my fav so far - it explains things well and has loads of pics
