i have 256 ram . but vga takes 128

At least 1gb. Perhaps 2GB if you board insists on doing RAM in pairs.

I would recommend 1 GB because 512 MB can support most programs but won't run them well. I heard that there is a huge performance gap in between 512 MB and 1 GB, but not much of one in between 1 and 2.

well you need to know what your motherboard will take eg speed of DDR, etc..
also making sure its dual. to get max speed out of the ram, i would suggest spending those few extra bucks since the better the quality the faster is goes.

Today's Standards:

2gb is the recommended amount
1gb is the standard amount
512mb is the low end amount

The true answer would be depends on the motherboard you are using. I have 1GB of ram.

512 mb ram will work more efficient thant ur 256mb ram
