It really does bother me. For some reason I think it is rude. I mean I understand not wanting to show too much flesh for respect purposes but seriously why hide your face? I don't understand? Is it your religious beliefs or you husband's wishes. What's going on? I'm just trying to understand, that's all.

I just don't think that any God would want us to hide our faces.

Tradition, culture or not, at least they (Muslim women) should show their faces for identification purposes. They can do whatever they want with their garbs but when she walks into a bank, a store or anywhere in public, she should have her face showing. After all "she" could be a terrorist man posing as woman, strapped with explosives and could get us hurt.

It is a product of religious belief and cultural tradition. You can also relate it to upbringing and conditioning. The question should not be why do they do it, but rather why does it bother you? To discover the truth you will have to search your own inner being. I do not think your statement is racial, but it does seem a bit intolerant of the culture of others. While I like to see people assimilate into the American culture when they come to this country, I wholly support their right to keep there are own cultural beliefs alive. When I speak of assimilation I refer to learning the language, and not expecting that everything should happen in this country as it does in your own country. So long as you can respect American culture, I can respect the culture of your home country. Diversity not only makes the world go round, it is also what makes the human experience so fascinating.

bronx: Questioning that which you don't understand is not racist. Misguided, maybe, but not racist. As to racism itself, the only way to eliminate it is through education and understanding as these increase tolerance. Just branding someone a racist for having an opinion is counter productive to the cause.

It is actually not part of the religion to cover the face. It is part of some arabian cultures, yes, but not a part of Islam. Some of these cultures root from Yemen and Saudi Arabia. Countries like Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon and Seria are not followers of this culture, although there are maybe a few who do this, thinking it is part of the religion. Even if some do cover their face, it is not rude because if this is a free country, why not be able to cover. Its rude to you maybe because you might be closed to the idea or hold unconsciece tension against the religion or maybe your just not used to it.

Not all Muslim women do this, but the ones who do have very strict home environments. Or perhaps it is their own belief. I don't see the point, honestly, but then again, in America, everyone is free to live their religion they way they see fit, and it's a great thing.

Muslims aren't the only ones with countercultural requirements. Orthodox Jews require modesty from women, and with their yarmulkes and side curls, Orthodox men are very easy to spot. Many conservative Christians won't let their kids listen to certain types of music. And so on, and so forth.

Most likely it's the centuries of forced compliance and part tradition. If you are an unattached female or even attached it's unseemly to show your face. Just like in our history women who wore their hair down after a certain age were considered loose. All thru history women have been subjugated to the will of society and men. Think about it and be thankful for what we have accomplished today!

They are covered because God says so and to prevent people like you from going astray.

Customs are hard to break. By the way Muslim marriages have a 95 percent success rate. Last I checked, US was 40 percent.

it is religious and cultural -- many religions have codes of dress. the hijab etc is just what is normative in tier society. If you get offended by that, are you bothered by nuns wearing habits? Why must you see someone's face?
Respect cultural differences -- not everyone would automatically respect yours, no doubt.

They are probably just used to it. It would feel really weird walking around w/ your face exposed all of a sudden when you're used to it being covered up.
