South Africans as a whole are facing many challenges. The problems of the past have not been forgotten. Many whites complain of reverse discrimination and many blacks are upset that there is still a lack of opportunity. HIV/AIDS rates and the number infected are some of the highest in the world. Jo'burg has a notorious crime rate, and there is an appalling nationwide rape rate. However, in spite of all of this, the people are relatively happy and outgoing. Even in the townships (slums) people have some optimism are intent on improving their lives themselves. There is a great sense of community that you do not see in a lot of other places. And though there is still palpable racial tension, every seems intent on making the country better as a whole. But for the most part, people work, mostly farming in the rural areas, and they sing, dance, drink and be merry. Much like the rest of the world.
