little trivia here.

In the begginign of the movie Maverick and Goose go up against a pair of MIG 28's (never has been such a plane)
The second one they know they cant shoot down so they decide to mess with his head. They turn upside down and flip the pilot off. he gets scared and leaves the area.

Who was the pilot?
What was so important about the man who played this pilot?
Why would it be that if a real pilot had done that scene (in the f-14) and flipped him off, that his career might have ended?

first right answrs gets the points.

very good. and the reason a real pilot would have lost his career (probably) was you dont flip off the Chief of Naval Operations lol

The pilot is Admiral Robert F. Willard, flight choreographer for the film. He is now Vice Admiral of Naval Operations for the US Navy.

Obviously, flipping off an admiral is a poor career move for anyone in the Navy.

As to the first two parts, I really have no idea. As to the third part, the pilot's career would be over because he wasn't covering his wingman and could have cost him his life. Not acceptable.
