I will be moving to a country that uses 230 volts electricity and would like to send along my 2.5 hp treadmill along with some of the stuff I will be using over there and would like to know if I can get a step up transformer to enable me use the treadmill and what capacity will I require.

I am not for sure. I alwayed used i believe a 1500 or 2000 transformer. Just beware that somethings run on different hrtz and can throw off a timing of a motor

Step DOWN transformer....

You should be able to find the VA or Watts rating on your tredmill. HP rating is very misleading. I won't go by that. You may see a rating by Amps. If you do, take the voltage and multiply by amps to get watts.

I would suggest getting something at least double the capacity. Inductive load (such as motors) require extra capacity. I won't go into technical details....

just get an avr or an automatic voltage regulator... but get something that can take the load of your 2.5hp threadmill.
avrs used for refs and airconditioners might do the job.
