i am referring not to the bomb blasts. i mean in terms of general safety, mugging, nightlife, etc.... is it safe to be out at night? or day for that matter

In terms of general safety, during the day it is just busy, especially the tube stop. Which means that it is relatively safe, though there might be the occasional pickpocket around or something of the sort. But basically no different than any other area of London. During the night, it is not as busy and can at times seem deserted, and can be a little spooky. I do not having any crime data, but my guess would be that crimes occasionaly do occur there. I wouldn't say it is unsafe, just keep an eye open.

The area immediately around the station has a well known bad reputation for prostitution and drugs, and is heavily policed.
However, it has been like that for over 75 years and the police know all the "regulars" and therfore they dont get too heavy -handed with them, as many have social or mental health problems. To the uninitiated or first time visitor, it is a pretty scary area, but those who know it feel perfectly comfortable and it is really not much worse than many other central areas in London. If you dont go looking for problems, they dont come looking for you.

Opposite the station are a a series of residentential squares which are architecturally quite good, but most of these are taken up by cheap hotels (many of which are frequented by local prostitutes)

The area directly behind the station was for many years derelict and empty, and genuinely frightening. ( it was often used as a site for film sets) However, it is currently being totally re-built for the new cross-channel train terminal and is bound to soon become more up-market and much safer.

There are lots of bed & breakfasts and small tourist hotels around Kings Cross. If you are a tourist then do not dress like one.

Kings Cross is not the kind of place you would want to spend time in, unless you like prostitutes and heroin (but if you don't bother them they will not bother you).

It is basically a hub, and there's not much to do there, but it is an excellent location if you are looking for cheap and safe accomodation. Just use it as as a place to lay your head at the end of the day, and explore the rest of London from there.

I wouldn't say it's unsafe but it is a bit rough. Extremely busy as there are the two great train stations and lots of small hotels and B+Bs. Yes there are prostitutes. I wouldn't choose it for a night out as I'd go up west but I wouldn't be afraid of walking back to a hotel at night either. Be cautious, safe and happy. Most of all hold your head high, walk with a purpose and don't act like a victim.

I Agree with one of the answers above. It can be a bit rough towards the Pentonville Road area , around Killick Street , etc. The area towards Euston is pretty safe. All in all, not recommended as a residential area.
