I'm 28 and deathly afraid to be underwater or have water splashed in my face. I'd really like to learn to swim and overcome these fears. Any suggestions?

I understand! When I was little I had a mishap in the water, and since then I have been scared to death of deep water. But I have learned to swim despite this. I hate having water in my face, too. It makes me feel like I can't breathe. I recently took a trip to Panama City and swam in the ocean. My friends and I bought those snorkel masks (the ones that cover your nose), and it was amazing! I didn't worry about water going up my nose or getting in my eyes. It sounds silly, but it really does help keep you calm in the water. We looked kinda stupid, but we had fun anyway!

Of course it's not too late for you to swim. I think to overcome your fears, you just need to learn how to swim. That way, you might not be afraid of the water anymore.

Remember. You float. You can learn how to swim without going underwater all the way, and when you get more comfortable, you can go under the surface. Take swimming lessons at your nearest pool. They often offer classes for older people, not just little kids.

Find out about classes at your local pool. They may already have a basic swimming class for adults. It can be embarrassing to take a beginning swimming class with children who are learning for the first time. I can't swim very well, so I just stay out of the water so I don't embarrass myself.

It is never too late to learn something. Good for you for wanting to learn.

My suggestion would be to look up swim lesson centers and make some phone calls. Be honest about your situation and ask for private lessons. Once you learn how to swim this will open a whole new world for you. Good Luck! And good for you!

Think positive! It is not too late. Condition your mind that you want to learn to swim..that would eliminate your fear. Enrol in a swimming lesson and trust your instructor. Tell him/her of your fear and how you want to overcome it. Tell him/her too on how you want to learn how to swim and achive your goal. With a professional swimming instructor, he/she can supervise you well and make you feel safe. And it is not only you who wants to learn how to swim in that swimming class and I am sure everyone will be supportive of each other. Be determined and stay focus. Go get your goal!

No, never to late. Sometimes when I go to the YMCA and I look at the pool and the ole 83 year old grandmas are learning how to swim. I don't know the use, but it's still never to late.

I can relate. I myself have a fear of being underwater. I actually taught myself to swim but it took months it was not easy first I had to gain trust of the water. You can do it! It may take work and trust and someone who knows how to teach lessons well and whom you can trust. I found teaching myself was easier because I do not trust well. I think that things changed when I overcame whatever it was in myself that caused me to fear and lots of prayer and focusing on other things

It's never too late to learn how to swim!!!

Therapy may be your best bet so you and the therapist can find out the underlying problem and you both can work collectively to resolve it.

Just one day deciding to take a plunge may do more damage than you would think.

Hope this helps
