Some teams change names (Houston Oilers to Tennessee Titans) while others do not (L.A. Rams to St. Louis Rams). Why would they change? Or, why wouldn't they?

It's purely a matter of wishing to continue the legacy (history) of the team.

The Oilers didn't really have a legacy of winning when they left Houston, but the Rams (although never having won a Super Bowl while in LA) had a long history in the NFL going back to the 30's. Plus, they started in Cleveland and didn't change when the came to LA, why change when moving to St. Louis?

Another reason is that the name "Oilers" is synonymous with the Oil that was once Texas's biggest industry. It would seem strange to be the "Tennessee Oilers" , when there's no oil in Tennessee.

One interesting situation developed when Art Modell moved the Cleveland Browns to Baltimore and became the Ravens. The Cleveland fans were so incensed by the team sneaking off in the middle of the night that Model bequeathed the name to the city of Cleveland so that the next expansion team to play there could be called the Browns....there's so much history in the name that it would seem sacrilegious to use the name anywhere but Cleveland.

I don't know why some and some don't. Some it doesn't really make a difference, but for some it doesn't make sense to keep the same name. The Houston Oilers-it made sense to be the Oilers because Houston and Texas are known for oil, but that made no sense in Tennessee

One team I think should have changed names is the LA Lakers. There are hundreds of lakes (or ponds) in and around Minneapolis, but how many lakes are there in LA?
