Definitely not!
Greeks and Greece have opened their arms to embrace foreigners and needy people! Now, more than 10% of the residents in Greece have come in the last 15 years. Two generations ago, the Greek population was doubled in matter of less than a year, to give home and hope to devastating people who survived the genocide of the neighboring Turks. And we can go on!

Thats a pretty generally (if not stereotypical) question, but the fact remains that in most countries that have a high degree of homogeneity, yes, outsiders are generally less well-received. However, in tourist areas, you will be treated like royality, simply because you're providing them with their bread and butter. Don't let what I've said stop you from seeing the world, though. You might have a better time than you expect.

The word I'd use is ethnocentric. Yeah, the Greek-Americans I've known are really into being Greek...a bit like that wedding movie. I've come across many Italian-Americans who are like that too.

The word is of greek origin but originally referred to a dislike of Barbarians! That in itself is understandable. I am Irish/American and have been to Greece several times and was welcomed everywhere in that country.

No!!! I am half Greek and half Israeli and if they were, my family would have freaked out if they were. True, xenophobia, which comes from the Greek word, xeno, meaning outsider, but so many other words have Greek origination too!

of course not. i live in greece, i am greek and we ve always had great relationships with foreigners. my neighborhood is full of emmigrants, we never had problems with them, we chat, make friends and work together. i think that things in other european countries are very difficult for foreigners. i dont want to mention particular countries but i ve been abroad as a tourist and the natives had a very problematic atitude towards me, i have friends working abroad and they face racism all the time. here there are extremely few incidents of racism, personally i havent heard of any. greece is a touristic country, we live with foreigners all our lives and treat them as best as possible.
