This phrase is often quoted by academics and universities. When they use it, it means that the study of such things as science, humanities, etc. will free you from ignorance of the natural and social world around you, as well as the fear and self-centered prejudice that comes with ignorance. Such study opens you to know ways of thinking to recognize the "truth" of the world's beauty and possibilities to free you to make new and better choices in life.

But the actual meaning of this statement comes from the person who actually made that statement the first time--Jesus of Nazareth (Jn. 8:32) The Truth that He referred to was the reality of God's existance, and His love for us through the person and actions of Jesus. To make these realities (Truths) part of our lives through faith and practice frees us from ourselves and those things in the world that would cause us spiritual death, while transforming us and opening us to spiritual life--the ultimate freedom.

The greatest truth that one has to ever know in his life is the truth that Jesus is the only saviour brought into this world to redeem us. He is the way the truth and the life. This is the greatest truth that man ever has to know.

I have personally experienced the statement. When I went through Eastern philosophy , I stood wonderstruck for a moment reading how the vedas pointed exactly to the figure of Jesus. Word for Word its written about the coming of Jesus .How he would be born, how He would be sacrificied , and many things recorded thousands of years back. At that moment I realised The Truth! i saw the truth with all its majesty right in front of my eyes!

Then immedietely what came to mind was the statement Jesus made to Pilot "The truth will set you free", & that was exactly what i experienced, freedom. Freedom from doubt.

In life thats the only freedom that we need. Freedom from doubt , from scepticism, thats all we need .

When something is presented as "the truth," it is automatically suspect as truth is always very much in the eye of the beholder. Verifiable facts, on the other hand, are accurate descriptions of our reality. Nonetheless, ideally, if the truth sets us free, it would be from our own ignorance.

Not knowing truth especially about ourselves makes us get more and more mired into ignorance. Knowing truth will set one free from delusional thinking, mispronounced judgement etc.

I would perceive that one would have to determine what truth he is trying to be free from. i.e. Does bush really care about America.
