as much as this pains me to tell a man hes right. well you are its a condition called edema. its normal. she needs to stay off her feet and elevate them to the same height as her head. also warm baths with epsom salts can help too.

My feet and legs swelled from about 6 months until I had my son. I would joke that the only stretch marks I would have would be on my ankles, but my blood pressure was normal most of the time. The last 2 weeks my blood pressure started to climb but the doctor was not worried. When I would go in to see him he would check my legs and feet and blood pressure and tell me to keep my feet elevated as much as possible, drink lot of water and to call him if I started getting headaches. As long as her blood pressure is OK and her doctor is not worried then all is good. Congrats!

Yes women's feet do swell especially in hot weather while pregnant, but it is best to put her feet up and get some of the pressure off. If the swelling doesn't go down after a hour or two of having them elevated, I would ask the dr to do a urine test to check for protein.

Yes, all pregnant women I know have gotten swollen feet. Pre-eclampsia is a real thing, and all pregnant women should be aware of the signs, but swollen feet alone isn't the only indicator.
She needs to drink a lot of water, and definitely put her feet up as much as possible. It's good to be active, but there's got to be a balance for optimum health.
If she can't get her feet up much during the day, she can elevate her feet at night by putting them up on a pillow (that'd probably be pillow number 87 on the bed at this point, eh? :-)). It just helps to get the blood flowing from the feet back to the liver, kidneys and heart where it can be processed and all the "junk" gotten out.

My feet swelled as did all three of my sisters during pregnancy, (all were healthy pregnancies) though it can be a sign of pre-eclampsia it does not always mean that, it just goes along with pregnancy for some women. I usually didn't let it stop me from moving about unless my feet started hurting, I just bought myself some comfortable shoes that would allow for the swelling.
Congratulations!

Feet swelling is definitely a part of pregnancy, and even of normal life if you have to stand a lot. As she develops more into her pregnancy her hormones are going to go crazy, almost like when she is about to menstruate (although some of the specific hormones are different). She will retain water and fat more as her body prepares to have to take on the burden of supplying food, water, and oxygen for someone else. If she is worried about something, advise her to have a regular blood pressure check. You can by the electronic blood pressure cuffs at any pharmacy. Check out this website http://www.emedicine.com/emerg/topic480.htm and it may help. I would also say that her mother may just be worried, but if she doesn't have a lot of experience with preeclampsia she may just be a bit of a hypochondriac. Throughout your wife's pregnancy, monitor her closely and report any unusual changes to the doctor and he/she will advise you what to do. Monitoring and communication are the keys.

Yes! It is TOTALLY normal! Her feet, hands and face may swell up, then go down, then swell up again...it happens ALL the time. If her blood pressure is normal, she has nothing to worry about. Tell her to try to stop stressing (although it's easier said than done), because, as she probably knows, stress can cause more problems than anything.
According to my doctor, the swelling is due to an increase in blood volume (pregnant woman have 50% more blood in their systems). It's completely normal according to him and many others I've talked to.
And...her mom is worrying her...that's totally unacceptable while she's pregnant. Perhaps someone should talk to her mom about putting things in her daughters head and making her worry for nothing.
So, give her a hug, tell her there's nothing to worry about, and rub those swollen feet! :-) As you've probably noticed, that's your new full-time job LOL

This is normal, and I would believe her doctor over her mother. Moms have good intentions, but they're not always right.
If the swelling becomes a problem (can't fit into shoes, etc.) tell her to soak her feet in epsom salt water. It's only temporary, but it'll feel good and will be relaxing. She should also sit down and prop her feet up as much as possible.

Her mom isnt a doctor so you cant believe everything she says. im pregnant right now, 6 months almost 7, and my feet and hands swell up. The only thing i can suggest is to keep them elevated and not stay on them a long time becuase that makes it worse. But atleast it will go away after she has the baby. ^_^ Congratulations! and good luck.

yes, your feet can swell with out it being pre-eclampsia. She needs to listen to you, get off her feet and prop them up. Tell her that you will take care of all of the chores, it won't hurt her to relax some. Tell her that her health and that of the baby is more important than her being on the go all the time. Good luck to you and congratulations on the baby.

Tell her not to wiorry. It just happens. I have had 3 babies, and swollen feet throughout each pregnancy. If her vitals are fine, and it sounds like they are, she shouldn't worry. Just have her sit and put her feet up. The more the better. If she is working, have her try to take extra breaks to elevate her feet. Best of luck to you!! (Another way to tell if you have preeclampsia is to look at her feet and calves as soon as she gets out of the bed in the morning. If they are swollen before she's been up and moving around, there is cause for concern.)
