Not until 2007. You are required to have a valid id and possibly a birth certificate. If you want the immigration process to go smoothly, take a passport, its just easier, you'll need one in a year anyway! Same goes for Canada!

This is what I told another person. The person above me said if they are staying less I'm pretty sure he meant more. If you are going for less than 180 days but more than 7 ask immigration to give you a permit visa. It's about $20 bucks and you can you use it from now untill 2007 to come and go without a passport. You should get one for next time though. Good luck.

The answer is no. As long as you go before 2007 you should be fine. After that you will need a passport to travel outside the United States and even then there are things you can do to avoid getting a passport like the PASS (some type of temporary passport). You have to be in the United Stated before December 31, 2006. I saw "2008", I saw "yes it's another country." This is from people that have probably never been to Mexico.

ALL YOU NEED IS YOUR I.D. AND BIRTH SERTIFACITE THE PASSPORT WILL BE NEEDED AT THE END OF 2007 FOR EVERYONE EVEN IF YOUR JUST GOING TO BAJA

It is advised to have one reguardless but you only need one if you are staying less than 72 hours or are going further than the border zone.
