I'll agree that America is a great country, but hardly any greater than most others in the western world.
Some American cities have murder rates many times higher than a small country of similar population.
It's the only developed country that engages in capital punishment, that actually holds the Bible up as evidence against scientific theories (eg evolution) etc...
Even on the wealth issue it doesn't fair particularly well. The average Japanese citizen is the wealthiest, followed by the Irish... an American citizen lingers in 9th place.
It's not a welcoming place for immigrants as some like to portray it, many European countries take in proportionately more immigrants (including Ireland).
Personally, I do like America. Historically it has done more to bring peace and prosperity to the world than any other country. Many of the greatest achievments of the 20th century can be attributed to Americans.
But why the greatest country in the world? I just can't see it.

For many, I think it is because of our freedom. We have given a lot up to social programs, and an insanely complex tax structure. However, it appears to many Americans that the rest of the world is already socialist, or rapidly heading toward it. Many in our country also desire to be socialists, but I beleive the majority still believe in freedom.
We see freedom as a virtue, and as long as we perceive (corretly or not) that we are the most free country on the planet, then we'll believe that we are the best. IMHO.

Because, we have the free enterprise system that will allow anyone from any walk of life be successful. Just ask Arnold Scharznegger, the governor of California. Hard work and brains can get you what you want here. Other countries have these class systems set up from the Monarchy days.

We ran all the misfits out of our country, we sent them back to England with their tale between their legs!
Our military can blow any 10 countries, that aren't super powers, right off the face of the planet any morning a 3am the order is given!
A super power would take a month!
We can out do, out work, out build, out produce any country in the world!
No country in the world would dare try to make a military attack here!
With all the military tech that the world knows about,
that doesn't hardly scratch the surface of our technical capabilities!
As bad as our military is Americans own more guns than our military has!
We have bigger houses, bigger cars, and more cars than any one else!
Even poor Americans can own a Cadillac!
Even a poor kid born in a cabin in the woods can be the President on day!
We make more electric power, and build more air planes than any other country!
We invented and have Football, Baseball, and Basketball!

Actually most amerikkkans have never been outside of the country other than the West Indies! They have no clue as to how to think globally and they are the most arrogant and ignorant of the Western world! Most have been dumbed down and they are still thinking 20th Century! It manifest destiny too just they way it was planned! And its a major shame how most white dont realize they are being duped too!

We out spend the rest of the world in consumer goods. We are great.
We have the highest amount of waste going into landfills of any Country. We are great.
We use more fossil fuel than any other Nation. We are great.
We spend more personal wealth on health care than any other Country. We are great.
The list of American firsts is vast. We truly are the greatest Country on Earth.

Well you have certainly opened my eyes a little.
But we are not the greatest for that reason alone. We are the greatest becuz our military can wipe out any country in under a month with more nukes than than all other countries combined.
So we are the greatest cuz we say so and if you don't like it, bring the war, and we'll finish it.

For all those reasons - minus the murder rates - it is a country where one can freely hold their own beliefs without fear of being persecuted or jailed.

We are separated from the rest of the world by two oceans, our education system, the fact that we have been spared wars on our territory and the parochialism that this isolation has created.
