Don McLen singer/sonwriter famous for the hit "American Pie" Roberta Flack seen his concert at the Troubador Theatre in Los Angeles she describe what she saw to Norman Gimbel and Charles Fox. Charles Fox wrote the song for his feelings for Lori Lieberman . Flack heard version on a plane she loved it and decided to record it herself.

OMG, I love that song, in fact I'm listening to it right now. But I don't know who inspired Roberta Flack's song, "killing me softly (With his song), I have a feeling it has to do something with betrayal or heart ace or maybe even both...

The song was inspired by a poem by Lori Lieberman, "Killing Me Softly with His Blues," which she wrote after seeing a then-unknown Don McLean perform the song "Empty Chairs" live.
