First off, good choice with going with PHP / MySQL. I've never used ASP but I love PHP. The best advice is to first if you don't, get a hosting service that uses PHP that way you can practice PHP and see the results. Most all of them do anymore. Then, just go through the book page by page. One thing I have found is that if I have a question on creating code for a project and I'm not sure how to go about it, I've always found help on messageboards and tutorials by doing google searchs.

As far as tips and practices go, just pay attention to security using forms and databases and use loops, arrays and functions. They make life much easier.

Enjoy!
