there are hardly any good films
all we get is silly remakes, stupid sequels, and worthless 'star' vehicles
I'm sick of seeing the same actors over and over again, especially if they are crap

You ask an excellent question. I've often wondered why some films are overlooked at the Oscars. I believe much of it has to do with politics, but I also feel they try to select the best film in their opinion that is something quite different from the mainstream. You pointed out American Beauty... that's an excellent example of something very different from what most movie-goers expect when they see the silver screen. One way I've learned to appreciate the Oscars more is not by the winner, but by those films which have been nominated. By seeing all the movies which have been nominated, you are usually on the whole not disappointed. For example, last year the nominees were Brokeback Mountain, Crash, Capote, Good Night and Good Luck, and Munich. Well, Crash won the Oscar for best motion picture. But I really enjoyed Capote and Munich... I have a hard tell picking my favorite of those two, but I'd go with Capote. The film inspired me to read the book on which it was based, "In Cold Blood." So although we both agree that the winners aren't who we would have selected, perhaps we can agree that, on a whole, the films, actors, and actresses nominated might make us aware of a movie we otherwise would have missed. By the way, instead of American Beauty winning, I would have preferred The Sixth Sense to take it that year.

The Oscars are about promotions and money so when a really good film/ actor etc gets the Oscar they deserve, I'm sorry to say, it is just a coincidence!
~Did you know that in 1979 Kramer Verses Kramer got tons of Oscars and Apocalypse Now got none, not best film, leading actor or director, so it is certainly not new to see crap rewarded and really good work totally ignored. On the other hand maybe it is just a matter of opinion, maybe they really thought Apocalypse Now wasn't a good film, seems doubtful, huh?

I have a feeling that an exchange of money for trophies is involved.
