If you are having bleeding and cramps with clots you don't need to be waiting to see the doc if you know you are pregnant. You need to get in NOW!

I didn't know if I was pregnant, didn't even think about being pregnant, but a co-worker was insisting I was from my actions. I went and got a blood test, but in the meantime I started my period. Full blown, flood gates opened and clots too. I decided I should call for the blood test results even though I knew that I started my period because they would think I was a nut for getting it done and never calling.

Well, I got the surprise of my life. They said I was pregnant! I told the guy there was no way because I started my period (imagine telling this to the lab tech! male at that!). He told me to call the doc right away, which I did and my doc ordered an ultrasound.

It showed I had a sac, but no baby in it. The ultrasound doc reccommended a D&C immediately to stop the bleeding, but my doc knew me better and said it was up to me, but since my periods were so irregular, it could be that it was just too soon to see a baby in there. As for the bleeding, it could be a miscarriage too. He said I could go home, stay in bed except to go to the bathroom, and see if the bleeding stopped and then get another ultrasound in 2 weeks. Totally up to me.

I opted for that. The bleeding immediately got less when I was off my feet and then stopped. I got the ultrasound 2 weeks later and there was the baby! Alive and well.

I was so glad I didn't do the D&C!
Everyone is different.

Never be afraid to call your doc or nusre. I would give them another call and try to get in sooner though. Good luck!

Question: Can you be pregnant and still get your period?

Answer: Well, no, you can't get your period once you're pregnant — once your body starts producing the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and your pregnancy is established, your menstrual cycle is interrupted and normal periods will stop — but you may have bleeding or spotting during pregnancy that can seem like a period.

Some pregnant women have what's called "implantation bleeding" that can happen around the time their period is due, and they may mistake that bleeding for a period. This spotting may be caused by the fertilized egg burrowing into the blood-rich lining of the uterus (a process that starts just 6 days after fertilization) and it's generally a lot lighter than a typical period — just a day or two of very light spotting.

If you're pregnant and you're not sure when your last period started, this can make establishing a due date difficult for your healthcare provider. If you have any doubts, your practitioner can feel how big your uterus is with a pelvic examination and estimate how far along you are. In most cases, your provider will also order an ultrasound before midpregnancy to measure the size of your developing baby to clarify exactly when the baby is due.

Many women who bleed a little bit in early pregnancy go on to deliver without any complications, but bleeding can also be a cause for concern. It may be the first sign of a miscarriage; if so, your symptoms will probably go on to include heavy cramping and bleeding much heavier than a normal period. If you have sharp pains in your lower abdomen, especially if the pain is only on one side, you should see your practitioner right way to find out if you may have an ectopic pregnancy (also known as a tubal pregnancy). Because of these potential complications, if you bleed at all early in your pregnancy, it's best to notify your doctor or midwife to get specific instructions. She may suggest getting a blood test to check your hCG levels or order an ultrasound to evaluate your condition more thoroughly.

If you have a true period, even a lighter/shorter than usual one, then you are not pregnant. If you suspect you are pregnant and are bleeding, you need to get checked by your doctor. It may be nothing serious, but realize that bleeding could be an indicator of miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy. It is always best to just check to know for sure. Good luck!

My mother had her period until she was four months pregnant so she had no idea she was even pregnant with me until she went to the doctor for the flu and that is when they told her!
