Well lin I had to accept you when said there was four billion stars.. cause I keep losing count after 10 as I only have that many fingers... But I thought you just wanted the whole bench to yourself when you said the paint was wet.. :P

We're all just too curious. We can see the stars, so we know there are too many to count ..... 4 billion sounds about right. If we could flick them around a bit, pretending to count them we would. But paint? Is it STILL wet? It's something you can't see. You HAVE to touch it!

Not only about stars, it is so with every thing in life.

If you lie big, people will believe you. If you come up with a small lie, they'll verify before they believe. Because Verifiable statements stand the test of checking them out before believing them. People are always conscious of small things, you know!

Small things do affect them immediately while the big ones don't .

But if you say, this open-end high voltage wire will give you a shock, only stupids will dare to check because that testing will be their last one!

So, in short, people tend to verify if it is easy & safe! Not when it is too difficult & dangerous / risky / hazardous!
Is it clear now?

They feel that the comical value of having a hand/other covered in wet paint is superior over the comical value of counting the stars in the sky.

it's hard to verify the number of stars, but easy to verify whether paint is wet or dry...(and maybe someone's had a joke played on them concerning wet paint?!)

you believe about the stars coz you don't want to count them and you touch the paint in case its dried and it never is!!
So you have to walk about with paint and wave to everyone saying hello with a red finger but they have red fingers too??

That's a great question.
Humans do have those incoherences, maybe it's because what the first one to answer says.
But still we know we sometimes do "stupid" thing that have no explanation
