I feel I'm too old to use that term, it sounds sophmoric. I don't like significant other-I associate the term with gay couples. And my man sounds ghetto. But how do you say-I am committed to this person, though not yet engaged or married?

I hate using this word also. Feels like I'm 12 when I say it. Sometimes I refert to him as " the boyfriend " just so it doesn't sound like I'm a sophomore in high school puppy love " oh my boyfrieeeend " *sigh* *bats eyelashes*

Most of the time I just use his name, people know we're together and know who he is... so I don't really have to say my boyfriend. Unless its someone I just met then I'm forced to say boyfriend, since he is not yet my fiance or husband. Of course.. if its someone I just met and they're hitting on me ... or making it obvious they're talking to me for one reason, I pull the fiance move. Not really lying since we ARE planning on getting married and we have discussed it.

You could always say

My better half.
My other half.
The man in my life.
Throw some spanish into your life, spice it up and call him your novio. (which means boyfriend in spanish)
Mr. Right or
Mr. Right Now if that's the case which it doesn't quite sound as if it is since you mention marriage.

I usually just stick with the name.. and if its someone that doesn't know who he is and that he is my boyfriend.. when I say something about him, and refer to him by name, they'll usually ask " who's he? " or "who's (enter name here)" and then... as corny or childish you may think it sounds.. you can just say " he's my boyfriend " and keep talking it. Most people recognize that you've said it, but don't think much of it because you began by introducing him into the conversation in more of an adult way, not dreamily talking about your bf.

You could always just call him your beau.

Man friend, guy friend, gentleman friend, partner, special someone, fiance to be. A lady could also say, future master- if she wants to. But boy friend is actually, what they all mean. And boy friend and girl friend are easier to say, than the atlernatives. Of course, a lady can say bf, and a man can say, gf. Although that might seem sophmoric, too. I think they do.

The best choice I ever made.

God's special gift to me.

Himself (best used only if you're Irish).

My future children's father (only if you're pretty sure the relationship IS headed in that direction, though).

Adam to my Eve.

Kermit to my Miss Piggy (for a lighter touch).

My current raison d'etre.

My personal once and future king (if you're an old-fashioned kinda gal).

This little Indian maid's Chief among life's treasures.

Sir Studley (but he'd better LOOK it or that one'll fall flat).

My stallion.

My OAO (one and only).

Good luck to you both and may life's path take you together for the journey and deposit you both gently on God's doorstep.

You shot down the most used terms for boyfriend. There is also my "main squeeze", "mate" but it sound like you work on a ship together, my male friend, my friend and confident, my sex partner, my future husband to be. Maybe boyfriend is best.

I'm in the same boat. I do use "boyfriend" for lack of a better term. I tried "partner" and that didn't seem adequate either. When you get a good answer, let me know!

It is so easy in Spanish, cause we have so many different ways to call boyfriend to a person that is close to us.

But you can say , my hobby, my partner, my honey, my close friend.
