there is a wireless connection set up in the church. they are all wireless laptops. i was told i could establish a wireless connection on my dest top. I need to know step by step how to do this and what i need to do this?

Well first of all you need to have a wireless connection receiver. I have one of the first ones ever put out by Microsoft. It probaby cost $20 now. It will plug into your USB port which is like a slot on your computer.
The receiver's manufacturer's software is loaded onto your computer and then will prompt you when to plug in the receiver to the USB port.
Then the setup will configure your receiver for the signal of the church and/or should pick it up automatically. I have a pocket pc which picks up people's signals all the time.
You may have to know some settings on the wireless signal IP provider. Earthlink requires you to have a password and name to set up wireless connection to their service and some don't. You need the IP numbers on some.
Very easy to setup but too long to explain.

If your laptop is wireless capable, Simply click tools, then internet, then wireless connection then just follow the prompts. You may need to ask for a password from the pastor of whomever is the network admin.

You need a wireless NIC card. They are fairly widely available in stores that sell computers/computer parts, like Comp USA, and office max. (or order it online from newegg.com).
It will have to be installed in your PCI bus (or equivalent) so make sure you have someone that can do that for you if you don't feel comfortable taking apart your desktop.
Then you just install the software that comes with it and scan the area for available networks. The instructions that come with the card will explain how. Your church's network should be visible.

Laptops have the benefit of mobility, therefore it is better to get a laptop. If you need to setup connection on desktop, you need a wireless router, antenna and others. You may want to search on the web for more information.

ok i just did this my self .do you have a wireless router? if so there should be a cd from your phone company.this will tell you how to hook up the connection.make sure that you install this wireless router on your first computer .when that is done take the cd to the other computer this cd should tell you everything to do if you need more help email me with more details
