In their psychology, most men and women have a strong herd instinct. It makes them want to conform in everything, from clothing styles, political view, and religious faith. It's what makes most people say stupid things, even if they know that those things are wrong. They say them anyway to fit in.
You can test this in Yahoo Answers, if you want to. Ask a question to which the right answer and the politically safe answer are different. Most people will line up in a hurry to give the politically safe answer, and only one or two mavericks will jump in with the right one.
This happens every time. It's why "conventional wisdom" has such a bad reputation: it isn't wisdom at all, except insofar as it's wise to keep your friends by telling the same lies as they do. It's why mobs do crazy things that they'll be sorry for in church come next Sunday. It's why democratic countries keep getting leaders who are corrupt, immature, morally weak or intellectually vapid.

it's really an individual thing, unless one has an exceptionally "different" part. with men... hair is a big thing... if you're losing it or if you're too hairy/not hairy enough on the body. also "abs" and "pecs" and "biceps" that are constantly flogged on tv. i have no idea what goes through women's minds. advertising has specialized in making people feel inadequate. all sorts of things that could have been part of our biodiversity and of life's progression (hair, weight, wrinkles, fat etc.) are made to look "bad" by people trying to sell you products that will undo nature.
