My mom was a midwife for a few years, delivered about 200 babies and told me that for the majority of her moms, their water broke during labor, not before. So they were already full-on breathing through contractions, and some were even pushing before it broke. It was less common for someone to just randomly have their water break while in the middle of the store or something like that.
For me, I was always 3-5 cm. dilated, 90-100% effaced, and at 0 station for a few weeks before labor began. And my water never broke until the head crowned. So you never know!
Good luck!

Somewhere between 10 and 20 % of women experience PROM, which is water breaking before the onset of labor. I think that the reason so many women report that their doctors broke their water bag is because doctors are more and more likely to intervene and rush a labor (via induction and other interventions) than let nature take its course. Remember, pregnancy is NOT a medical illness! Your body will go through labor on its own terms, which in most cases is perfectly fine, even if it doesn't coincide with what you might like (you in the general sense).
I have three children. With the first, my water broke about 14 hours into labor. With the second, my water broke about 10 hours in labor. With the third, I had PROM with no cx's for several hours.
Good luck, and remember, your body and your baby already know how to give birth.

I had four children my water NEVER broke on its own. For three, docs broke my water when I was dilated to about 7-8, the other broke as my baby emerged.

my water broke before labor. Sometimes a doctor has to use a crochet hook type gadget to break the water. Either way it does not really matter just as long as it is broken.

5 births here... and dr broke water on every one of them, but I don't think I was ever quite to 10 cm yet.
Also, on a side note, I'm seeing a midwife with this pregnancy for a homebirth. She said that most of her cases, the water brakes on it's own when the mother is dialated to 10cm....just learned that last week!!

The doctors had to break my water all three times when I was pregnant. They never told me why. I was two weeks over due with all three.

normally they do break on their own. if it doesn't the dr will break the waters to induce labor with a little hook. it's uncomfortable but doesn't really hurt.
