Err..no. Draft=slavery=violation of 13th amendment. Volunteers are better fighters, ask anyone in the forces today.

No, we should not bring back the draft at this point. If we can not keep the quality of military needed then maybe. Right now with an all volunteer military we have the people who really want to be there to defend our country. I am very proud of each and everyone of them. My SIL is in the military and he has been to Iraq and Afghanistan and he has now returned safely.
No mother wants to see her child go to war but if my son were to enlist and that is what he wanted then I would fully support him.
If the draft were started again, we would have all the draft dodgers like we had during Vietnam. I think military service should be for the ones that truly want to be in there and want to serve their country and are proud to do so.

I don't think it should ever be mandatory because there are going to be enough people that will want to take care of our country willingly. There always will be. If military was forced upon all men and women 18+ there wouldn't be enough people that care about this country and would only do a 1/2 *** job defending the country. So the answer to your question is NO I don't think so. The draft in my opinion is a necessary back up if more people are needed in our countries desperate need. No one could convience me different.

I also spent time in the military. (I was one of those lower-middle class people that needed the college money) and saw many other countries imposing the "mandatory military time". I believe in Germany people have the choice of going to college/ trade-school or going into the military.
I think this is a great idea...
I agree with all of your points plus:
1) It's motivation for people to do something with there lives. I think it would cut down on poverty, crime and welfare.
2) It would open people's eyes to different experiences, cultures, and way if life.
3) It would build a stronger America...if everyone had to fight for what is given to them, they would definitely appreciate it more.

No, this country is founded on freedom, the freedom of speech, the freedom to choose. Well if it is mandatory to join the military then it should be mandatory to go to college after your 2 years are up. Do you agree that college if for everyone? I think we should leave the system as it is. I know for a fact that I could not do what is demanded of people in the Military and thank God that we have the choice to join or not to join. I also pray daily for those who do join. God bless you for all you have done for our country!

Doesn't piss me off, I spent 6 years in the Navy, but then I'm not part of the privileged.
Won't work: remember, all the Chickenhawks wiggle and squirm their way out of the draft anyways...medical problems such as knees, etc. Even if one gets stuck (like Bush), they would just get assigned to a nice cushy National Guard post, and then go AWOL for a year so as to not have to take a drug test. Must work, you get elected president, and make war all over the place to compensate for their lack of manliness! Something I still don't understand. It is a statement on the direction America is headed, which to me is a sad state of affairs.

I think you are bringing up fair points, but alas the wealthy will always have a say in how things are run...
I know Singapore and Estonia have mandatory years every male needs to serve before going on to college... I have friends you had to go for the training. Maybe you could research and see how these nations armies fair in comparison to the states.

No.
I think it would do people a lot of good. Our society is greatly lacking in respect and disciple, a stint in the military would probably help. However, I believe in freedom above all else. "Mandatory" service by definition would take your freedom for however many years it was required. We must choose to become better people and a better society, it can not be forced upon us.

The benifit of an all volunter military is that the people in the service want to be there, not forced to be there. Too many people would be doing everything they could to get out.

No I do not believe the militay should bring the draft out. I don't think that would be fair to any families who have one or two children. I have two teenag boys and if one got drafted and god help me if he got killed over there I would have only one son left and what if something happened to the other son? I wouldnt' have any children left. They did it once before and look at how that ended.
