Weight loss while on Wellbutrin only occurs in about 23% of the patients taking it. And, when it does occur, the average weight loss is about five-to-ten pounds. Weight GAIN is also a potential side effect, by the way, occuring in about 13% of patients.

If you were going to be one of the patients who lost weight while on Wellbutrin, I think you would already been seeing that effect. It usually takes your body only about 3-4 weeks to adjust to a new psychoactive medication. If you are taking it SOLELY to lose weight, I'd suggest giving up on that plan and trying a program like Weight Watchers instead. Losing weight because of a drug just means you'll gain it back as soon as you are no longer taking the drug. If you want to lose weight and keep it off, you need to make long-term lifestyle changes instead.

However, if you are taking it for depression/anxiety, stick with it. Depression/anxiety can cause weight gain all by itself, which means once you've begun to treat the underlying cause, you may lose some of the weight just because you are getting back to a more "normal" psychological state.

Good luck!

I am on it w/lexapro for depression. The lexapro was prescribed first. Then when I told the doctor it was helping but for some reason I am smoking more she sujested that we combine it with the Welbutrin. I guess that helps with depression and as a side effect helps perople quite smokeing. As far as weight. I have noticed the last 2 months Ive gained a bit. I have always been fairly thin. And I think ive gained about 5 pounds. I hadnt given it much thought though. Going up or down a bit happens w/me from time to time. I dont know if its connested.

I think it just depends on the person. If you are an emotional eater you may not lose weight. My Godson was on it for years and he always had to be made to eat. He was always super thin. Now he is off of it and has gained a LOT of weight.

Welbutrin? That is prescribed for depression and you are using to lose weight? It actually caused my husband to gain weight.

I have a couple of friends who took Wellbutrin but it didn't make them loose weight. If it made people loose weight more people who are overweight would probably want to take it.

I used it for a while to try to quit smoking, but it really didn't do much for me. I definately didn't lose weight although that would have been wonderful.
