Saying that FOIA helps terrorists is ridiculous.

The current U.S. president seems to think that FOIA helps terrorists. But have you read "1984" by George Orwell? In it, a totalitarian state is kept in power through three main principles: War Is Peace, Freedom Is Slavery, Ignorance Is Strength. While all three principles apply to our current administration, the last one is the most relevant to FOIA. The argument goes that if the terrorists don't know what the government is up to, then we're safer from the terrorists. But are we as citizens safe from our own government? (I sometimes wonder which George is in the White House right now.)

Only through transparency can we be sure the government is working for us, not the other way around. FOIA is not a messy inconvenience that should be done away with in a time of (endless) war: it's a tool that must be preserved for the sake of democracy.

FOIA certainly does not help terrorists. The freedom of information act only applies to de-classified documents.
