Language changes.

It used to be acceptable to say "colored." And "*****." Those are now considered offensive, as "African-American" came into general use.

And in another decade or two, it'll probably be offensive to call someone an "African-American."

Yes, but it's not considered PC any more (except in the case where it is already in use, such as the United ***** College Fund). Typically, African American is the preferred term.

I think the word '*****' is a respectable word, but what it evolved into in the Deep South ie. from '*****' to 'Nigra' then '******', which is offensive.

Would a white South African, [one born in that country] now in the US be offended, to be referred to as 'African American'?

NOTE : I'm trying to explain the transition of a respectable word to an offensive word, and the 'Censors in the US' have changed it to ****** Get Real please, show some common sense. I would rather have A God than a ***** and prefer living in the UK to the ***. The *S* is a dirty word in a lot of places, don't you agree

***** was a word that white people chose for African Americans. Firse it was just a name that started to be used as a term or derision and is no longer in use.

the word was never considered a racist word, but it was back in the day, the politically correct way to refer to what is now labeled an African American. But before that there was Afro American, before that it was Colored. What amazes me is that people of color are still allowing themselves to be labeled everything except what their heritage is. Who is the fool, the one on the corner selling number two pencils for $500 each, or the ones buying them?

Oh please...you can't say anything to anyone anymore without pissing SOMEONE off. I'm so sick and ****ing tired of feeling like I have to tiptoe around on eggshells so I don't "upset" anyone. What the hell? Personally, if I were black, I'd rather be called ***** than n*gger. I don't think it's offensive...just outdated.

Well, it's negative now, but in the past it was a neutral term. It derives from a word for black, so really that's all it is. But now a days it is racist. So, yes to your question.

On any given day, whatever way you choose to declare, you'll be wrong. I still don't understand why the NAACP is allowed to call itself that.
