Yes, ask the mom what she likes.
You might think to get her a fun craft kit, if you want to encourage creativity and if she likes that kind of thing. I know when I was 8 I loved stuff like beading kits, sewing kits, stuff like that.

Get her some Raven clothes, or a Build A Bear Gift Cert, Ask the mom what she's into

Build a Bear. They're expensive, but girls have so much fun doing that.
A pretty dress, Barbie if she plays with them, art supplies. I don't know what she likes, but my girl is 8 and she loves all that stuff!

Get her a barbie or a baby doll. I loved that kind of stuff when I was 8. Or, get her a DVD.

There's a board game called "Girl Talk". It's only like 10-12 dollars, but little girls LOVE iT!! good luck!

i found out leap frog first edition is very good for all children math,reading,farm animals,what ever you choice it is very good for the child especially at that age it really expand there world of learning.
