... all of them seem to have a clause (?) which is in a past tense - e.g. went, slept, left - but they seem to be in common usage for current tense conversations - please explain a) is it grammatically correct, and b) why?

yes its correct. English is the most complicated language because we have so many rules in our grammer, and so many words for the same thing. I think its because over the years we have had so many influences from other countries, influencing our language. I.E The french (william the conqurer) The Vikings, Saxons etc. Its a wonder anyone can laern it really

You are right, they are incorrect, because there is a mixing of tenses. The problem is, if it becomes common usage, it eventually becomes accepted.

It would be more correct to say----It is time to leave for ----wherever. It is time to fall asleep. It is time to leave.

The "we went" part is what some grammar books call the Unreal Past. You haven't gone so the act of going is unreal, or imaginary, like, "If I were a rich man" or simpler, "If I were you."

Bc you are going to do something in the present tense.
We Are .... (whatever)

Not we "have" (whatever

It's present tense the way you state it
