The gears and cogs that drive reverse gear are of a different type to the forward gears.the forward gears are angled and are what is called 'synchromesh' meaning they slip into contact very easily while spinning, the reverse cogs are standard horizontal cogs which means that one side must be stopped and 'crashed' into the other cog which is spinning slowly, thats why some cars jolt or crunch when put into reverse gear.Thats why it whines, its a different type of gear.
tried to explain it easily, hope you know what I mean. look at this pic, the cogs on the right are the reverse gear,

Wez, earlier on, has got it nearly right but it has bugger all to do with the synchromesh which only comes into play when you are actually selecting the gear, be it a forward gear or reverse and nothing whatever to do with the noise the gearbox makes when the car is in motion. If you study Wez's picture, however, you'll notice that reverse gear (the one at the extreme right of the cluster) has what are termed "staight cut gear teeth", whereas the rest (the forward gears) have "helical" teeth (helical effectively means set at an angle for the non-techies). What happens in practice is that helical teeth have a nice progressive meshing action and thus result in very quiet operation, but straight teeth mesh together in a series of "bumps",(I'm trying to be as non-tech as I can, here), and therefore emit the characteristic whining sound. Aftermarket high-spec gearboxes for competition cars are sometimes ALL straight cut gears and if you've ever heard one you'll know what a hell of a noise it makes -gearbox-wise!

If it's a stickshift car, then that's perfectly normal, hun. It's just how the reverse gear's cut. It's nothing whatsoever to worry about, sweet. Peace and love. Be lucky. xxxx

B'cos for all front gears cars have synchronizers, but for reverse gear usually the car dosen't and they are just gear to gear mesh, which makes this noise while gear shifting as well as while running in reverse
