It sounds funny but do they just dream about sex all night or is it some kind of biological normal thing to happen? It seems by morning they are like a tent pole.

Yes, it's true, but only when we are young!

As you get older it's only at half-mast!

It's just the competitive properties of the human body. If a man is not ready for sex, then some other male will be... and most of you women are so hot and sexy, why would we turn any of you down!

Also, women REALLY don't like to wait...So, basically it's our job...or else we get fired!

Bellerophone hit the nail on the head. Androgen levels (the mail steroid hormones tetstosterone and dihydrotestosterone) indeed have a certain cyclicity with a peak (pun not intended, really!) in the early morning hours. Testosterone levels are notoriously variable, but this overall cycle is something that is pretty well detactable. Why androgen levels are so high in the early morning is another question, and I am not sure how to answer it. We are often too fast in assuming that everything that exists, be it structure, behavior, or physiology, has to have adaptive value or otherwise not exist. Well, there is good reason to believe that many things have adaptive value, but many do not. So we can speculate until the cows go home about why testosterone levels are exceptionally high in the morning, but let's just see whether there will be more revealing research in the future.

Hope this helps.

You've gotten some good anecdotal answers and a couple of good biological ones. There is one mis-conception, however - older guys also wake up hard and ready in the morning.

I never did equate it with wanting to pee, however. That's KINKY.

Hee, hee - yes, a number of serious medical studies have shown men typically awake with an erection. Some of the same studies, plus different ones, have shown that women are not usually pleased by the idea.

Now that is what I indeed call a sad and serious waste. But then, I am a "morning person" anyhow ....

Often referred to as ' morning wood' , the more formal term is nocturnal tumescence and seems to correspond with REM periods of sleep. The question of why is often claimed to be urine retention. Most guys know the frustration of waking up with a stiffy and having to pee like crazy, and although not impossible to urinate with a hard on, there's nothing more amusing than watching a guy trying to lean as far forward as possible to get that thing aimed somewhere near the bowl. Given a few experiences like that and it's easy to see why most guys would come to this erroneous conclusion. However, a more likely cause, or need, for nighttime stiffys seems to be oxygen. According to a well decorated sex research psychologist, Al Cooper, ' The penis lives in a low oxygen state. Nature takes care of this by making sure the penis gets enough oxygenated blood through erections.' This is not a 'written in stone' theory since the argument could be made that there are more erections at night because oxygen assists with the erectile chemical processes and oxygen levels are higher during sleep. So there's a bit of the 'chicken or the egg problem' here.

This does lead us to the topic of horniness. We should remind ourselves here that waking up with a hard-on does not equate to waking up in a love making mood. So women should not feel unwanted when their man limps to the bathroom, spends five minutes or so waiting for that thing to come down enough to pee, then proceeds to check his email. At the same time, we should remind the fellas that you're not going to wake up every morning with an erection.

Well pitching a tent in the morning is believed to be completely normal. The male brain is constsntly processing pictures of sexual stimulation and we react to them. The body will react by creating an erection when the mind is stimulated. If we see these images all night, it is difficult not to have an erection in the morning. I have had an erection every morning for like the last who knows how long, and it seems normal to me. My girlfreind might disagree..........I always start bugging her in the morning....well I guess I dotn have to go into detail...hahaha

It is a purely biological thing. It's called a nocturnal erection. I don't know how it works or what causes it, but that's what it is.

They have found cave paintings that they originally thought were depictions of hunts or whatnot, but they noticed that the man in the cave painting had an erection so now they think the paintings depict dreams that the person had.

You should know about the role of the male-hormone testosterone...

Its levels fluctuate during a 24 hour period such that it peaks (at least in young men) in the morning. I think this explains things at least to some degree.

Yeah, it is very normal. Whether it's dreams, memories or just a biological thing, I'm not sure.

It must be. I woke up one morning and my cat was using it for a scratching post. Once I got one before i went to sleep and had to stay awake all night because there wasn't enough skin left for me to shut my eyes. One night I woke up and my nephews were playing campout under my sheets Sleeping bags and lanterns, the whole nine yards.
