If memory serves it keeps the intake valve open for part of what would be the compression stroke forcing some of the air-fuel mixture out of the combustion chamber. When the valve closes compression begins, but with less fuel than normal for an engine of it's size.
If efficiency is your goal you would probably be happy with it's long power stroke on less fuel; but if you want a responsive engine for a sports car there are better choices.
It would probably be a good match for a hybrid design, a turbo-diesel would also be a good match.
I believe it is actually the Atkinson cycle.
