I was just in Java two weeks ago and am saddened that this happened. Despite the time that has passed since the last "big" Tsunami wave, early warning systems aren't in place to warn people that a destructive wave is on the way.

What you can personally do is become an activist on this issue. Start spreading the word that something needs to be done and try to come up with ideas (small and large) that can help make a difference. Perhaps you can come up with some ideas in the following areas.

1.Education: Since Indonesia is very active geologically (prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity), residents in all coastal communities should all be educated about how to spot an immanent Tsunami. (i.e. Rapidly retreating water that is not associated with normal high/low tidal activity).
2.Local warning approaches: Even if residents had only a 10-30 second warning (from a siren or loud bell near the beach) it could be the difference between living and dying for many. By speaking with respected village/ political / religious leaders in coastal towns you might get traction around an idea that works.
3.Regional Warning Systems: As this is costly it won’t ever happen unless it’s made a big enough issue. You need to engage politicians, your local press and religious leaders (as they can strong and influential in Indonesia) to keep this in the public eye and keep it an issue. Write them, speak to them and convince others to do the same.

Hopefully you will get some good ideas from all the answers you receive.

You would think that by now your government would be making plans to build shelters for such conditions. Either shelters that are above sea level by 20 or 30 feet or buildings inland that could withstand such a wave every few miles apart. I understand that Tsunami warning systems are being put into place, but do not know how much time they offer from the warning to the actual event. Please press the issue with local government and organize people to demand that plans and structures be put into effect. People united can have a powerful effect.

If I was given enough warning, I would move to higher ground I suppose... but I know that can be hard in some places in Indonesia...

Natural disasters can strike anywhere in the world without warning... Unfortunately you can't be guaranteed complete safety anywhere ~ I guess we just have to live with what's thrown our way!

I am an indonesian too...

there isn't much we can do, is there?
sadly, since my resource is limited, so i can only come up with two things:
1st: give away some money into the charity box and hope that it might help those people in need.
2nd: meanwhile, forget about going to beaches for holiday destination...

i'm so sorry.
i think i would leave, come to a place that wasn't at such a risk, but i can imagine that you probably don't have any other place to go, yeah? that would be hard. i don't know, but i think i would leave and go to somewhere safer
