I'd say do one more - just make it a gooden for the old fans! Then you should semi-retire, but keep writing for others.

Good Luck!

I think the best way to go out is to go out on top before you get fat and old and no one wants to see you anymore. Musicians often reach a peak creatively and critically, and then can't top what they have done. They end up hanging around too long and just look sad. Another good time to retire is when you no longer want to do it, or when people don't want to pay to see you anymore. A final album and a tour would be nice, or even a best of wityh a few new tracks would be OK.

Go out when you are on a high. Dont bow out when you are having to scrape together the fans to fill a stadium or you are having to make a greatest hits album or a swing album just to make a bit of money. Go out when you are at the top of your league you can always return later and people will remember you where you left off. A great star not a washed out one.

You should retire when you have children or at least take a hiatus from touring. I am sure that you maybe you can keep making albums just take your time and spend all the time that you can with your children!!

If you are up there enough to be famous and you want to retire to be with family yeah sure make that final album and retire. Family is more important then anything.

IT's not just the whole family deal but it's that you feel you owe more to your fans so I wouldn't retire just take a break. everybody get's upset when their favorite band makes one final album or breaks up.PLus a lot would be expected for that final album you'd be gettting yourself into whole lot more which you probaly already know

I say retire when things are still going good. You'll want to be remembered in a good way not a bad.

The best time is when your music stops selling or when the music you write goes downhill. Or when you just don't want to.

Alternatively you could take a 1 year break.

As soon as you realise you're doing it for the money and not for the passion.
Either that or as soon as you can't connect with your audience anymore.
The only thing worse than an sell out is an old sellout
