Hezbollah killed and captured Israeli soldiers on the Lebanese border. Hezbollah controls southern Lebanon. Israel responded by attacking Hezbollah targets, which happened to be in Lebanon.

Hezbollah then started lobbing rockets and missiles into Israel, hitting Israeli towns and killing Israeli civilians. Israel responded by attacking Hezbollah encampments and destroying infrastructure, while working to avoid Lebanese civilian casualties.

Hezbollah then started lobbing rockets from the middle of civilian settlements, while hiding behind civilian targets. Israel responded to these continued attacks, unfortunately inflicting some civilian casualties (despite warning the Lebanese civilians ahead of time to flee) because Hezbollah would not let the Lebanese civilians flee to safety.

Hezbollah controls large sections of Lebanon, and there's very little the official Lebanese government can do about it. So, to get at Hezbollah and make them stop, Israel is forced to attack them where they are -- in Lebanon.

On June 28, 2006, after Hamas militants crossed the border from the Gaza Strip and captured an Israeli soldier, Israel began Operation Summer Rains and sent troops into the territory. On July 12, Hezbollah militants captured 2 Israeli soldiers, sparking the 2006 Israel-Lebanon crisis. Hezbollah has since declared "open war" on Israel. As a result Israel has exercised a strong retaliatory front including strikes on Lebonese bridges, power plants, and army bases. Both Hamas and Hezbollah said that they will only release the soldiers in a prisoner exchange with Israel; however, Israel has said that they will not engage in any prisoner exchanges and will only end the conflicts if they agree to suspend all rocket attacks into Israel and unconditionally release the soldiers.

because Hezbollah snuck into Israel and kidnapped 2 soldiers, and even though Israel pulled out of Gaza and southern Lebanon, that is where the missiles are coming from that are hitting Israel
