I have a few of them... they do hurt, but not unbearable. The outline hurts the most because the line is very thin. By the time he does the shading the skin has numbed and they use more needles to cover more area.
The outline actually feels like a cat scratching the same place over and over. The shading feels like someone using a rasp on you lol
Make sure you tell your artist whenever you need to take a break--they're pretty good about that. Try not to tense up, it will hurt even more. Just relax and focus on your breathing.
It will be sore for a few days afterwards.... make sure you use the ointment they give you frequently so it doesn't dry out.
I hope this helps... Enjoy your new art!

It really depends on where you get it. Mine is on my lower back and a lot of it did hurt. The first part is the worst and then you know what kind of pain to expect. After that you only really notice it when they hit a sensitive area. FYI The more fat or meat in the area being done the less pain.

Only the outline hurt because the tattoo artist was using a thicker needle. The coloring & shading was less painful (scratch your skin with your fingernails as hard as you can stand it - that's what it feels like).
Here's a very important pointer: Make sure you eat something before you get a tattoo done. The physical shock of having a tattoo done & low blood sugar could cause you to faint, as I did to the bewilderment of the tattoo artist, who tried his best to coax me off the floor.
Another important hint: Make sure you check out different studios very thoroughly, and ask your tattooed friends for references. Also, make sure your tattoo artist uses disposable needles, and that you actually see him/her open the package in front of you (this is to prevent risk of HIV or hepatitis).

No, it doen't hurt at all. I have one on my lower back and I love it. If I could do it over, I would. I have a tribal butterfly on my lower back. It feels like a tingling feeling and when they are doing the out lines it kinda stings. But after that u don't feel nothing. It actually feels kinda cool. I'm about to get another tattoo, one on my foot.

Yeah, it hurts.. but it's nothing worse than a horrible case of the cramps. Just grit your teeth... breathe deep and wait for the pain to numb itself.
afterwards, it will feel like a bad burn... but that doesn't last too long and again, imagine your worst sunburn, it's like that. And you got through that uncomfortably.. but not overcome with pain.
Trust me, it's not as bad as people make it out to be. Just follow the instructions on how to take care of it provided by your artist.
Good Luck! ( :

No, actually it didn't hurt all that much. Not as much as I expected. I remember being really suprised, I thought it was going to be unbearable pain, but it was just an annoyance really. It's definitley tolerable. I plan on getting another one. Most people who get one end up getting more. This shows that it dosen't really hurt that much.
Good Luck!!!
PS-mine is on my back, by my right shoulder.

Its not that it hurts it kinda feels like sand paper getting rubbed on your skin. I have three tattoos, one on the lower back, my neck and the top of my foot. I would have to say the one on the foot caused a little pain but not to bad. Good luck!

I'm not going to lie to you. It does hurt somewhat. Depends on where you get it. I have one on my ankle that they hit the bone about 5 times (skinny ankles) and it hurt, but it is without a doubt my favorite. I have one on my back/shoulder too, and that didn't hurt as much. I have 4 and counting.. Good luck!

I think everyone feels pain different. It also depends where you get it.
I got my on my side, right around where you think your kidney would be. It hurt like crazy. Felt like someone was scratching my skin really hard. Then the guy told me after, that is one of the worst places to get it.
My girlfriend got one on her lower back around her tailbone (like handlebars) She didn't flinch. Said it felt like a massage.
I hear you should not get it where you are really fleshy, it is more sensitive.
Good luck!
