I'm from the US and travelled to Bangalore for a couple of weeks this year. The food is really good (if you like spicy food, you are in luck). I particularly enjoyed a couple of restaurants there:
- The ground pepper (my personal favorite)
- Don't remember the name, but there was a chinese food place that was totally great
- Ask your hotel concierge for recommendations. You will really like the food there. I did.

How much money to bring? It depends. I took my credit card (Mastercard) and about $250 (US dollars). I used more than that in cash. Be prepared to tip folks. Your taxi drivers, waiters, whatever - all are looking for a small tip. Don't give a huge tip (taxi - try about 100 Rupees or less, others less).

As far as general tips: I'd strongly advise you to drink only bottled water and sodas. Brush your teeth using bottled water. When eating fruits, try to stick with fruits that have thick skins like bananas and oranges. Take some sanitary wipes for your hands. Take a 'portable toilet paper roll', since some places have no toilet (just a hole) and no tp.

If you plan to tour, bring some hard candy or pencils to give to the kids that are begging. You'll find beggars everywhere. If you give to one, you have to give to all, so be aware of that. You can always say no.

Hope this helps.

Hey Arvina,

Welcome to India.
1. India is like heaven on earth.
2. Food is really cheap and good but dont eat at roadside open food centers. look for some good and hygienic hotels.
3. India is safe country but dont carry too much of hard cash, better carry credit cards. If you are hiring taxi/cabs then pay according to the meters dont agree with drivers who demand for more money but you can give some tips above the meter charge.
4. You will get better hotels to stay which are quite cheap, may be 800-1000Rs ($25) for one day. but if you want to stay in star hotels then it may cost you $50 or even more. food is very cheap. You may have to spend $5 to $10 for food per person per day depending upon your diet.

Places to visit:
Dont miss these places.
1. TaajMahal (Agra), Delhi, Raajastan, Himachal pradesh , Gujarat (north India)
2. Goa (West India)
3. Hampi, Mysore, Beluru and halebidu, Kodagu, Shimoga in Karnataka state (South India), Kerala state (south India)

there are many many other places which you can visit. It depends upon for how many days you are visiting.

'Kashmir' which is called Heaven on earth and Switzerland of India is a awesome place but try to stay away from this because more terrorist activities.

Please find some other popular and beautiful places details in the below websites.

Have a nice and safe journey.

welcome my friend,
India!!! Looks like India, lol. we cant compare it to another place. Just a nice place to be. I think U will feel that when you are here. coz if I want to say, my time wont be enough to describe about our country.

About food: Its so tasty one. we use more spicy foods. But u can get foods as per ur taste too.

Safe: I think u wont be in any trouble coz u are visiting with ur family members. So nothing to worry abt that.

Unsafe: Just avoid having more cash in hands. Better to have bank cards.

Money: It depends on you. I think its not a expensive thing for you. But it depends the way u spend and how long do u stay.

Good luck. Hope you will enjoy ur trip.
Take care.

i have been to India and I have lived there, it was is great! It is full of culture and festivals and so on.

The food is great, u have to try a mango lessi it is awesome!

It was pretty safe, as long as you are not alone outside at night you will most probably be fine.

Just bring your credit card and about $100 in cash wich u can exchange at the airport.

its mindblowing,
food is gud if its been cooked well, dont eat @ roadside open-air places,
dont ever drink tap water, make sure the water's filtered,
carry anti-mosquito skin creams, use the mosquito burning coils too,
preferably travel in groups
food is extremely cheap -if u arent eatin in very expensive hotels all the time..Depends on which places ur goin to. So if i was spending a week in India guess abt 7000 Rs. per person

Hi Avrina where are you from? As somene said, are you from Bangalore?

Well it is very safe to visit India. I am tour operator. If you need any assistance, please let me know.

Please budget your expenses and prepare an itinerary. India is a huge country - a sub-continent. You may not see all of India in one go.
