You can play it all day without an amplifier. But you will barely hear it unless you plug it into something. If you can't afford an amplifier, you can buy some small things for headphones or you can buy mini amplifiers for $50 or less at a local music store.

Yes you can play it without the amp but you yourself will hardly be able to hear it so i recommend to use an amp

Knew a guy when I was in New Jersey....he would practice without amp when necessary.
He Loooooved Hendrix.
HE had a Stratocaster.

When i wish to not disturb others, or if I want to just "lose myself " in it, I plug into my effects box and play with headphones.
If you want to be heard by others, an amp is needed.

yes you do, my husband has an electric quitar and has a small amp for our house.

it certainly helps if you want to hear it properly. you can get small 10 watt ones cheap enough. they do the job for practicing.

If you want to be able to hear it loudly you do. But if you just want to play it, no.
