there are many ways to do it.

the best way is ppc (pay per click) advertising. its completely targeted advertising and that is very effective.
websites like google and yahoo are the best but knowing how to do it properly is what keeps you from spending a lot of money with little return.

banner advertising is another way but it can be costly as well.

search engine optimization of your website is another good way to advertise your business because it improves your page ranking and makes your listing on google higher.

there is also free advertising online. There a lot of sites that do it but most dont have a lot of traffic to justify a link exchange ore even listing there.

there is a webpage that has a list of the 10 best free online advertising websites. Websites that have a lot of traffic, in fact, one of the sites is in the top 5 of all the internet

here is the link http://advertisesmallbusiness.com/free-online-ads

Have you thought about pay per click programs? The two biggest, I think, are Yahoo! and Google

A few free resources – check out the sources box for links:

1) Create a blog pertaining to your field

2) Use Yahoo! Local & Yahoo! Groups – Be sure to read the TOS for each one!

3) Write articles pertaining to your field and/or expertise.

4) Advertise on Craiglist

Also, consider signing up for an affiliate program. These programs enable you to advertise on other's sites (your affiliates) and once a sale is made to you, your affiliates & the program are paid a commission.

I listed a few handy sites & articles relating to marketing, promotion & advertising. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

Compared to offline businesses, the investment required to start an online business is minimal. A popular way of earning money on the internet is by providing information and services. This can be monetised by advertising or charging a subscription. You can also make money online by selling products on auction websites like eBay or through your own website. Well join the local industry associations which are a great place to get relevant market contacts fast and cheap and you can send out mailers or organise a "get-to-know-us" party for the members. Always network and ensure that there is positive word-of-mouth at any given opportunity without seeming like a pile-on.

It all depends on a number of factors. What kind of business and how much you want to spend are just some of them. There're so many ways and options available. Whatever works fine for me might not work for you.

-Pay-Per-Click - In my humble opinion seems to be the most eficient because it will bring you targeted customers that are looking for your products or services that you sell and you only pay if they click on your Ad.
I use Yahoo! Sponsored Search and you can open an account with as little as $5 and they'll credit $50 in your acct whem you sign up.

-Search Engine Submission is good too.

-Free classifieds on the net

Also start a blog to promote your site, it's free:

http://www.blogger.com
http://www.myspace.com/ etc

-Try Search Engines(There are so many around)

Free Ads (They're having problems today, try tomorrow)

We live in a visual-rich society. Before we even began to understand text and reading at a young age, our exposure to TV and other visual media begins it’s imprinting our brains. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a video is worth ten thousand more. Check this maybe: http://fullframeproductions.com.au/ .
